The Telegraph:
French President Nicolas Sarkozy held a giant and elaborately-produced May Day rally in front of the Eiffel Tower on Tuesday, as opinion polls put him behind the Socialist candidate, Francois Hollande.
The president, who is currently trailing Hollande by at least three points in the latest opinion polls, criticised unions for backing the Socialists and for their protest on the other side of town.
Repeating his regular warning that only tight control of government spending would save France from the same fate as Greece and Spain, Mr Sarkozy also slammed high finance, saying the country needed a culture of hard work and rewards for labour.
